Ozone generators that are sold as air cleaners intentionally produce the gas ozone. Often the vendors of ozone generators make statements and distribute material that lead the public to believe that these devices are always safe and effective in controlling indoor air pollution.

- Ozone was discovered by Christian Schonbein in the 1840's.He smelled a unique odor during electrolysis and electrical sparking experiments.He recognized the odor as the same odor observed after a lightning flash.Schonbein named the substance"ozone" after the Greek word"ozein".
- For the past 140 years,ozone has been used for municipal drinking and waste water treatment.In 1906,Nice,France built the first water purification plant to utilize ozone.
- Since 1984,all Olympic Games Competition Swimming Pools have been sanitized with ozone.
- Ozone has been used for 65 plus years to purify commercial swimming pool and spa water-worldwide.
- The Metropolitan Water District (MWD) located in Los Angeles,California,has one of the largest municipal ozone water treatment plants in the world.
- The International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) bottled water specification regarding ozone has been in use since 1982.Ninety percent (90%) of bottled water is treated with ozone.
