Thanks to its desirable properties, activated carbon holds immense possibilities for use in diverse fields. The steam activation process makes carbon extremely porous, opening up large surface areas for absorption of chemical reactions. Typically, 1 gram of activated carbon has a surface area in excess of 500m3, which is about the size of a football field. Coconut shell based activated carbon in made through steam activation process at temperatures 800-1100oC. The resultant product has a fine pore structure, which makes it ideal for absorbing organic impurities from both liquids and gases.
